Biographical documentary on Wim Wenders’ own history, focussing on the director’s life prior to his leaving Germany for the USA after his international breakthrough with The American Friend (1977). Wim Wenders talks about his upbringing in post-war Oberhausen, his journey to Paris, where he lived as a young painter and made his decision to become a filmmaker, and recounts his experiences as a film student, conveying the euphoric mood among the students at Munich’s Hochschule für Fernsehen und Filmin in years 1967-1969. “My first big cinematic love became the little girl Alice, alias Yella Rottländer, from Wim Wenders’ movie Alice in the Cities. Before this encounter films didn’t play a particular role in my life. But from this day onward, when I first saw this melancholic road movie shot in 1974, I literally absorbed Wenders’ movies one after the other, because their ability to provide answers to the important questions in my life. Marcel Wehn
(Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, FRG, 1977) firstly completed diverse interships in the graphic design and ad writing sector in Karlsruhe. He gained experience in film production in Berlin and Hannover until he began his documentary direction studies at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Ludwigsburg. In between he lived and worked in Mailand, Italy for a year. Since 2000 he realized many short films and documentaries, that partecipated to several International Film Festivals. The film One Who Set Forth – Wim Wenders’ Early Years was his final project at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Ludwigsburg. The film had its world premiere in course of the section “Perspective German Cinema” at the Berlinale 2007.
